Exploring Youth Mental Health & Justice: System Dynamics Modelling

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to present the system dynamics model of Youth Mental Health developed at the Brain and Mind Centre, The University of Sydney to Judge Ellen Skinner at NSW Children’s Court.

This model represents a significant advancement in our understanding of the interconnectedness between youth mental health & justice system.

While we discussed how we incorporated the mutual impact of mental health and justice for the youth, the potential opportunities discussed on how systems modelling and policy analysis dashboards could be useful for the youth justice sector. These tools can provide valuable insights into how different interventions might play out over time, allowing for more informed decision-making. We discussed various scenarios and potential opportunities where these models could be applied, such as in predicting the long-term impacts of policy changes or in designing more effective intervention programs.

Thanks to A/Professor Jo-An Occhipinti (née Atkinson) for leading this conversation and the Right care, first time, where you live program our model is part of and funded by the BHP Foundation.
Special thanks to Associate Professor Garner Clancey and Dr Christine Song for arranging this conversation.
