Mastering Advanced Topics in System Dynamics with Vensim: Exclusive Workshop Recording

Advanced Vensim by Hosseini on YouTube

This video recording is for an online workshop on mastering the advanced topics in system dynamics with Vensim held in January 2022 in Persian. I will record the English version soon. In this video, I, first, reviewed some common mistakes in system dynamics modelling; then, I discussed how to model decision-making; calibration and sensitivity analysis of SD models are explained; finally, I presented how to create simple dashboards for the SD models in Vensim.

Common mistakes in system dynamics

The reference for this part of my presentation is a book with the same title by Juan Martín García; it is translated into Persian by my colleague and I (see HERE). More information about the original book can be found HERE.

This part includes some important mistakes in:

  • Drawing causal loop diagrams (CLD)
  • Drawing / Formulating Stock Flow Diagrams (SFD)
  • Vensim software errors
Systems-Modelling

Let’s learn Systems Modelling together!

I share useful information about Systems Modelling here weekly.

Modelling the Decision-making

In the next part, I showed how to use the following functions in modelling the decision-making procedure:

  • Conditional function (If Then Else)
  • Lookup / table functions
  • Fuzzy Minimum / maximum

I worked with participants on some examples to implement the related structures in Vensim.

Calibration / policy optimization and Sensitivity analysis of system dynamics models in Vensim

First, I discussed why we need model calibration and policy optimization and showed how to set up and run the optimization. Next, it is explained how to use Monte Carlo simulation to conduct multivariate sensitivity analysis on parameters with uncertainty in SD models in Vensim.

Creating simple dashboards for system dynamics models in Vensim

After reviewing the importance of developing dashboards or interfaces for system dynamics models, I showed how to create a simple dashboard step by step.

This educational content is useful for all of those interested in system dynamics, especially for master’s and doctoral students who are working on their thesis research. See the recording (in Persian) here:
