The Future of Mental Health in Western Sydney

I had the opportunity to attend the Mental Health Awareness Month Roundtable: The Future of Mental Health in Western Sydney, alongside The Hon. Rose Jackson MLC and leaders from the health, education, business, and community sectors.

A few key themes strongly resonated throughout the discussion:

  • The importance of early intervention in shaping long-term outcomes, especially for young people
  • A shift toward a prevention-focused approach, rather than reactive care (and the significant role of social determinants beyond the health system)
  • The need for more community-based and place-based services across the region
  • Workplace mental health as a shared responsibility, requiring all organisations to implement meaningful mental health response plans
  • And a persistent challenge: workforce shortages across mental health services

It was encouraging to see how closely these system-level discussions align with our research.

In our published research about youth mental health in Western Sydney, we focus on identifying which services have the greatest impact on population-level mental health outcomes (including psychological distress, ED presentations, and self-harm hospitalisations). Also, our findings suggest that digital mental health interventions have strong potential as an important solution in the interim, as investments are made to grow the workforce over the longer term. However, digital solutions are not a substitute and both specialised services and digital interventions are needed to stabilise and improve outcomes, particularly for young people.

One area that remains underexplored in such conversations is the value of integrated service planning and cross-sector collaborations.
Our modelling shows that when organisations align around a shared vision, coordinated priorities and investment, the effectiveness of interventions improves significantly. This highlights how we work together is just as important as what we deliver.

I hope these conversations continue to evolve toward system-level action, enabling decision-makers to move beyond individual solutions and toward coordinated, evidence-informed strategies that truly improve population mental health outcomes.
